The 'anxiety suitcase': what to pack for your first trip so you forget nothing
Panic before packing kills the buzz. Forget ten-page lists — here's your no-fluff checklist of the essentials.
Panic before packing kills the buzz. Forget ten-page lists — here's your no-fluff checklist of the essentials.
Main rule: you're bringing things, not your whole house. Forgot something? Buy it on the spot — toothbrushes and chargers are sold almost everywhere.
Section 1: Documents and money (the most important block — check it three times). Passport (check validity against the country's rules). Printouts of bookings: hotel, tickets, insurance — don't rely on your phone alone. Driving licence (international or the new Russian format if you plan to rent). Insurance policy (print it and save the hotline number in your phone). Bank cards: a main UnionPay card + a backup from another bank; warn your bank about the trip. Cash: dollars/euros for the first exchange + a little in rubles for airport emergencies.
Section 2: Gadgets and connectivity. Smartphone and headphones. A universal plug adapter (even Turkey has varied sockets). A power bank (up to 100Wh for carry-on). A separate flashlight (the phone doesn't count). Wired earphones (for in-flight entertainment with no Bluetooth). An old point-and-shoot or second phone as a backup for photos or a SIM.
Section 3: First-aid kit (don't count on 'I'll buy it if needed'). Painkiller. Remedy for upset stomach and food poisoning. Antihistamine. Plasters, bandage, antiseptic. Your personal essential medicines (with a reserve!). Sunscreen and after-sun (often pricier on the spot).
Section 4: Clothes and shoes (layering and 'rollers'). Shoes No. 1: comfortable walking sneakers (your main investment). Shoes No. 2: flip-flops/sandals for the beach and shower. The 'three layers' system: base (T-shirts) + insulation (hoodie, sweater) + wind/rain protection (windbreaker, raincoat) — even a Thailand rainy season calls for a windbreaker. A 'universal bottom': trousers (jeans/quick-dry) + shorts. Underwear and socks (pack for 2–3 days fewer than the trip — you'll wash). A hat/cap. Swimwear (even away from the sea — there may be a spa or pool).
Section 5: Cabin backpack/bag (always within reach). Documents and money. Power bank, headphones, a book. A water bottle (empty, fill after security). A light jumper (planes get cold). Wet wipes, hand sanitiser. Toothbrush and paste (to freshen up after the flight). A tea/coffee sachet (a lifesaver against bad airport coffee). Packing lifehack: the 'roll' method — don't fold, roll your clothes; they take less space, crease less, and you see everything at once.
Final check before leaving home: turned off the iron/kettle? Left keys with neighbours/family? Scanned or photographed ALL documents and emailed them to yourself / put them in the cloud — that's your main backup. Remember: the fewer things, the more freedom. Packed your bag? Set aside a third of it. That'll be just right.
